The Copper Coast is the 25-kilometre stretch of Co. Waterford coastline west of Tramore — a UNESCO Global Geopark of cliffs, coves, abandoned copper mines and one of the most dramatic short drives in the south of Ireland. Dunmore East is the perfect overnight base, or the right place to start and end the day.

What the Copper Coast is

The Copper Coast is a UNESCO Global Geopark covering the coastline from Kilfarrasy in the east to Stradbally in the west. The name comes from the 19th-century copper mining at Bunmahon and Tankardstown — the engine houses still stand on the clifftops. The geology is volcanic and old, and the cliffs are unlike anything else on the south Irish coast.

The drive from Dunmore East

From Dunmore East, head west via Tramore — the Copper Coast Road (R675) begins at Tramore and runs through Annestown, Bunmahon, Stradbally and on to Dungarvan. Allow a full day for the drive and stops. The road is narrow in places; take it slowly.

The stops worth making

Annestown Beach (small, sandy, sheltered). Kilmurrin Cove (dramatic horseshoe cliff cove, parking on top, steep steps down). Bunmahon Beach and the geological centre (a good rainy-day stop). Tankardstown copper-mine engine houses (clifftop, walk-up, free). Stradbally Cove and the small fishing pier. Each adds 30-60 minutes to the day.

Looping back to Dunmore East

The full drive Dunmore East → Stradbally → Dungarvan → back is around 120 km and a full day. The natural place to end the day is back in Dunmore East itself — boots off, salt on the skin, an evening meal at The Spinnaker. Ring ahead from the car if you're rolling in late.
