Beaches Near Dunmore East
Dunmore East itself sits above a small strand. Within a 10-minute drive you have four more — each with a different character, from sheltered rock-pool coves to open Atlantic beaches with proper surf.
Counsellor's Strand — the village beach
The strand directly below Dunmore East. Sheltered by the headlands, easy access from the village down the steps near the harbour. Sandy at low tide with good rock pools at the eastern end. Lifeguard cover in peak summer. Walk-from-village close.
Newtown Cove — sheltered swimming
Six kilometres west along the coast, a small horseshoe cove with a concrete swimming platform popular with local sea-swimmers year round. Clear water on a calm day. Limited parking — go early in summer.
Garrarus Beach
Roughly 8 km west of Dunmore East, a small surf beach with Atlantic exposure. Quieter than Tramore, popular with local surfers. Strong rip currents at certain tides — check before swimming.
Tramore Beach — the long strand
Tramore's 5 km beach is 18 km west. Sandy from end to end. Full lifeguard cover in summer. Surfing lessons available. A different kind of day out from Dunmore East — bigger, busier, longer.
After the beach
Cold and damp from the sea, sand under the fingernails — the right move is a hot meal. The Spinnaker Bar, back in Dunmore East village, is a short drive from any of these. Ring ahead from the car park.
